Coat sleeves shortened from the shoulder
When a coat cuff must stay original, we take the sleeve off at the crown and set it back shorter. Photographed in Collier Row, Romford.
A coat sleeve is not always shortened from the cuff. If the cuff has a vent, working buttons or a finish that must stay, cutting from the bottom ruins the garment. The correct job is to take the sleeve off at the shoulder and reset it shorter, keeping the original cuff.
This grey wool overcoat came into our shop on Collier Row Road for that reason. The first photograph is the job in progress: one sleeve off at the crown, lining and armhole open. The second is the coat hanging with both sleeves back on.
